You've decided your event deserves a spectacle. The only question left: fire show or light show? Both are striking, both pull every eye to the stage, both leave a lasting impression. Yet they are two very different worlds. The right choice doesn't depend on which is more beautiful, but on where your event takes place, the atmosphere you want to create, and how important branding is to you.
This guide helps you choose. At Lunar Shows we work with both, so we have no preference: we'll point you to the show that makes your moment strongest. Below you'll find a quick decision tree, an honest comparison, advice tailored to weddings and other events, and a hybrid option for those who want the best of both worlds.
The short answer: a quick decision tree
Four questions, and you'll usually know which direction to look in.
- Indoors or outdoors. Outdoors, fire or light is always an option. Indoors is almost always light, unless you're working in a large arena, warehouse or event hall with the right ceiling height and safety margins.
- How much space do you have. A fire show needs space and a safety zone. A light show is more compact and fits smaller spaces without compromising on impact.
- What atmosphere do you want. Raw energy, power and a shared "wow" moment? Fire. Magic, futurism, colourful transformations? Light.
- How important is branding. Logos, corporate colours, video or text in the show? Then light is your best choice, because it's fully programmable.
Still in doubt? Read on, because sometimes the combination is the right answer.
What is a fire show, and when does it work?
A fire show is about power and dramatic build-up. Fire has something primal about it: it literally draws people in. The moment you announce that fire is coming, you'll see guests gather around the stage. Everyone has seen something with fire before, but no one knows exactly what your show will bring, and that sense of anticipation is priceless.
A fire show works especially well when you want an impact moment: the opening of a party, the announcement of the bride and groom, the finale of a gala, the official opening of a building or festival. It's the moment every phone goes up and guests nudge each other.
Our fire shows, such as Crescendo and Eclipse, are built around that arc: a calm beginning, a build to a climax, ending on something people won't soon forget. Fire also lends itself perfectly to atmospheric outdoor venues: a castle garden, an inner courtyard, a large terrace, a festival field.
What is a light show, and when does it work?
A light show is about magic and futurism. Instead of raw power, you get a colourful, dreamlike experience in which we can transform an entire space. Think sparkling effects, flickering patterns, drifting colours and projection mapping that brings walls to life. People love something high-tech these days, and a light show feels like the future.
What makes light unique is colour as an atmospheric tool. We tune the palette entirely to suit your event. Greens and earthy tones for a sustainable theme. Magenta, blue and white for something futuristic. Warm amber for a romantic evening. And everything is programmable: logos, text, video, choreography accurate to the second.
Light shows work both indoors and outdoors, although outdoors they're slightly more sensitive to the weather. They take up little space, require no safety zone, and are therefore an excellent fit for smaller venues or more intimate settings.
Fire show or light show at your wedding?
Weddings call for a specific consideration, because the evening usually moves from outside to inside and the impact moments are tightly timed. Venue, guest count and the timing of the evening together determine which show will land at full effect.
Outdoor ceremony or garden party
A fire show works wonderfully as an opening or finale moment. It's a shared spectacle that brings guests together, perfect after the speeches or as a transition into the after-party. Castles, farmhouses and country venues lend themselves especially well to it.
Indoor reception venue or hall
Then a light show is your best choice. You match the colours to the wedding theme, programme a choreography to the first-dance song, and completely transform the atmosphere in the room without a single guest needing to step outside.
Want both
You can, and at larger weddings we recommend it regularly: a fire moment outside and a light show inside, tied to set moments in the evening. We'll come back to that shortly.
Different events, different choices
Not every event is a wedding, and the balance shifts depending on what you're celebrating.
- Corporate event and gala: branding weighs heavily. A light show with corporate colours, logos and possibly a short projection film feels like a professional production and is a perfect fit for a hall or event venue. Fire can serve as opening or finale, but the heavy lifting is usually done by light.
- Festival or open-air event: fire draws a crowd. Programme an announcement an hour in advance and you'll visibly grow your audience turnout. The raw energy suits the outdoor character and lifts the festival feeling.
- Opening of a building or venue: fire as a ceremonial moment outside, followed by light in the interior. That order works almost every time: first a spectacle to talk about, then a space to admire.
- Product launch: light show with projection and logo. Your product takes centre stage, the light is the platform. No smoke, no smell, no safety zone getting in the way of the photography.
- Private party or anniversary: choose what suits the person being celebrated. Do they love romance and magic? Light. Raw energy and a shared moment? Fire.
